From April 2024, several areas in Tanzania, particularly in the eastern region (Pwani, Morogoro, and Dar es Salaam), experienced heavy rainfall, leading to flooding, especially in areas of Rufiji District in Pwani Region.
The Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania (BMMT), in collaboration with The World Federation of the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Community (WF-Aid), has successfully provided food aid to families affected by the floods in Rufiji District, Pwani Region. This assistance aimed to offer relief to communities facing severe food shortages due to the extensive damage caused by the floods.
Overview of the Relief Effort:
- Aid Provided: Each household received 40 kg of rice, 30 kg of maize flour, and 20 kg of beans.
- Total Beneficiaries: 1,198 individuals across 222 households and 150 students at a local primary school.
Timeline: The entire relief operation, from procurement to distribution, was executed from August 20 to August 25, 2024.
Impact of the Flooding: The recent floods have caused significant devastation, including:
- Destruction of Homes: Many families are left without shelter.
- Damage to Crops: Floods have severely affected agricultural lands, threatening food security.
- Disruption of Local Businesses and Infrastructure: The economic and social impact has been substantial.
Acknowledgements: The affected communities have expressed profound gratitude to BMMT and WF-Aid for their timely assistance. The support has provided a crucial relief in a time of urgent need.
