OUR HISTORY
The Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania represents a landmark in the propagation of Shi’a Islam across East Africa. Established in 1964, the Mission was the result of tireless efforts and visionary leadership aimed at spreading the teachings of True Islam in a region where the Shi’a community was virtually non-existent.
Origins and Early Development
The journey of the Mission began in the early 1960s. At that time, the Shi’a Ithna-Asheri presence in Africa was minimal, with most Shi’as being Khoja traders from the Indian subcontinent. Recognizing the urgent need to spread the message of Ahlul-Bayt (A.S.) among the indigenous populations, key figures in the community, including Mulla Husein Alarakhya Rahim and Professor Khwaja Mohamed Latif Ansari, advocated for missionary work in Africa.
The pivotal moment came when Maulana Sayyid Saeed Akhtar Rizvi, a young and dynamic scholar, arrived in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. His efforts, including learning Kiswahili and English, significantly advanced the Mission’s objectives. By 1962, he had prepared a comprehensive tabligh scheme, which, despite mixed reactions, received substantial support and led to the official establishment of the Bilal Muslim Mission.
Expansion and Impact
Registered on April 16, 1968, with a leadership committee including Haji Ahmad Hussein Sheriff Dewji and Haji Mohammedrafiq G. Somji, the Mission initially focused on Dar-es-Salaam but quickly expanded its scope. It has achieved significant milestones through educational initiatives, publication in English and Kiswahili, and various social services, including eye camps, microfinance, and Ramadan relief.
Legacy and Ongoing Efforts
The Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania remains a pioneering institution in Shi’a Islamic tabligh across Sub-Saharan Africa. The blessings and support from Ayatullah Sayyid Mohsin al-Hakim, Ayatullah Sayyid Abul Qasim al-Khui, and Ayatullah Sayyid Ali Husaini Sistani have been fundamental in its development and continued success. The Mission’s enduring impact reflects the dedication of its founders and supporters in advancing Shi’a Islam and serving the broader community.
